The (No) Internet Experiment

Here's the thing.  I like the internet.  It's an endless resource ever at my fingertips.  So I abuse it.  I don't even want to know the amount of time I've spent online over the last year.  If I am away for a week I don't have any trouble going offline, but I spend far to much time in front of my screens when the option is there.

Let's face it.  There is much I want to do.  dreams I want to pursue, thoughts to be had, family and friends I know I don't see enough of, cooking, music, cleaning, studying, exercise.  All far more worthwhile then catching up my FB feed or watching movies on youtube.  (hey, at least I don't have an actual television).

In short, I am so much closer to the person I want to be without the internet.

I'm not about to delete my facebook, or give up blogging or online courses or news sources.  I'm not doubting the online world is useful if we make it serve us the way we want it too.

This is, essentially, the first time with my own place and internet and computer. In the past I've relied on stops at friends and the library.  You know what?  It was better that way.

I love the outdoors.  I love conversation, adventures, life.  You know, the real version.  I'm just terrible for procrastinating it.

So, here's the plan.  For the next week I'll be online for no longer then half an hour each day (including my apps), outside of studying.  I'll still be blogging, but I'll just c/p from word.  Actually, don't be surprised if I blog more, and better quality.

I'll miss some of my mind numbing time wasting standard habits but we'll see.  Maybe I'll have to enact this as a standard part of my life.

HAHA.. thats why i have stopped focussing on most things online. i locked down my website. and only removed all the messengers on my laptop and my twitter app on it. i am now focussing totally on my biz and life. and making an effort in the direction. if you are there on facebook do add me at http://www.facebook.com/nitinarv/
you need to stop spending too much time on the net and start somethign that would take you away from it all :D

I think this is a good idea. I find all too often I waste the day online rather than get on with something more worthwhile. The feeling you get at 11pm when you've accomplished little more than finding a good movie to watch and clicking on twitter repeatedly is horrendous. I'm going to try this as well. And hopefully at least get some laundry done...

I agree to what Ella said. I should do the same thing to. Darn internet made me do less about anything. I wish i could have the strength to stay away from the internet too!

So goodluck on your experiment!

Thanks guys! So far it's going pretty well. I'm amazed at what I've managed to achieve, and also at the other time wasting strategies I've come across. Haha. I'd encourage anyone else to give it a try.

I've been contemplating doing the same myself as I've spent way too much time online as well.

I'm not as productive as I used to be. Though I have found turning off my msn has helped.

And I was doing great, right up until I discovered Scrabble for facebook... *Sigh*

Ah, yes. I play on an app, and it's totally addictive!

That is so funny, I have just recently thought of the same thing. The past couple days the internet has been giving me so much shit. It would connect and disconnect. I was getting furious because all I wanted to do was check my facebook, twitter and blog.

Really? I was getting made because I wanted to log onto my social networking sites and couldnt. I realized how quickly pathetic and dependent I was on the internet. I might take the same road and try other things I enjoy as well.

I'm on a PC for 10 hours a day with my job. Generally when the day is over I don't want to look at a monitor.

Also, I live far from my family and I work even further away so I use msngrs to keep in touch....even with my Grandma.

It's so hard to unplug!

I stopped twittering and playing games on Facebook and I actually became more productive.. I still use my facebook to reply to messages but that's it.

I agree!
So many people are obsessed with their cells and the internet that it's pathetic. It's time to start living!
I'm now following you :) I read your guest post on Ramblings of a Singleton and I'm in the same boat as you!

Thanks for the comments and follows! This topic always seems to hit a nerve with the internet savvy in our age group.

I, personally, really need to find a sustainable way to help cut down my own internet habits, cause my self control is not the generally the best.
